Snapchat “The Keys” — 45-Minute Digital Security Course for Teens

Snapchat, the platform with 750 million monthly active users, has faced persistent criticism for its lack of protection for minors. In response, the brand launched “The Keys” — a free 45-minute digital safety programme available in more than 20 countries. Good news? Yes. Enough? Not quite.

What is Snapchat’s “The Keys” programme?

The Keys is an educational initiative launched by Snapchat to raise teenagers’ awareness of online risks directly inside the app. The programme includes interactive modules covering:

  • Privacy protection — Understanding who sees your content and how to control your audience
  • Contact management — Differentiating trusted friends from strangers
  • Reporting and blocking — Acting against inappropriate content or behaviour
  • Digital footprints — Understanding that what you post may remain accessible indefinitely
  • Consent and respect — The fundamentals of responsible online behaviour

The numbers that explain the urgency

Snapchat is used by over 70% of French teenagers aged 13–17 (Médiamétrie, 2023). In Morocco, it ranks among the five most downloaded apps by 15–25 year olds (App Annie, 2024). Yet according to Childnet International, 1 in 3 teenagers has already received an unsolicited sexual message via instant messaging.

More concerning: according to a 2023 study by the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), “disappearing” photos on Snapchat are frequently captured via screenshots or third-party apps and shared without consent — a phenomenon known as non-consensual image sharing or revenge porn.

What the programme does not cover

The Keys is a genuine step forward, but its limitations matter:

  • The programme is optional — Snapchat does not require users to complete it
  • It does not replace a conversation with a trusted adult
  • It does not address peer-to-peer cyberbullying
  • Arabic language support is limited for MENA region users

How to build on this learning as a family

  1. Complete the programme together — Open Snapchat and go through The Keys with your child. Discuss each module as you go.
  2. Review privacy settings immediately after — Check who can message your child and who can see their stories.
  3. Set a screenshot rule — Explain that screenshotting someone’s photo is a breach of trust, even if technically possible.
  4. Talk about “friends” they’ve never met — Many Snapchat users add strangers to boost their score. Discuss the risks openly.
  5. Complement with structured learning — Cyber Sqool modules cover topics The Keys doesn’t, in French and Arabic, adapted by age group from 6 to 16.

Your child’s safety on Snapchat is a shared responsibility — between the platform, parents, and teachers. The Keys covers Snapchat’s part. The rest is yours to take.
